What a repair visit actually involves
A proper diagnosis starts at the electrical side — checking voltage at the pressure switch and control box — before anything gets pulled out of the ground. Pressure tank condition, pressure switch settings, and visible wiring get checked next. Pulling a submersible pump is the last step, not the first, because it's the most labor-intensive part of the job.
If the well itself is the limitation — a low water table, an undersized well, or a pump that's simply outlived its usefulness — a repair will only buy time. That gets explained plainly rather than patched over and left as a surprise for next season.
Jet pumps vs. submersible pumps
Jet pumps sit above ground, usually in a basement or well house, and pull water up using suction — they work fine for shallow wells but lose effectiveness past roughly 25 feet. Submersible pumps sit down in the well itself and push water up, which makes them the standard choice for deeper wells and most homes built in the last few decades.
Repairs differ quite a bit between the two. A jet pump repair is often a same-visit fix since the pump is accessible. A submersible pump repair may require pulling the pump and drop pipe out of the casing, which takes more time and equipment.

Well pump systems combine standing water, electrical wiring, and — on submersible setups — components sitting well below grade. It's not a project to troubleshoot past the breaker-and-visual-check stage without the right equipment. Misdiagnosing a pressure switch as a dead pump (or the reverse) is one of the most common — and avoidable — expensive mistakes homeowners make.
